Cover Reveal: Honor's Lark

Today I am sharing with you a cover reveal from one of my author friends. It looks fantastic, Rachel! Enjoy!

COVER REVEAL: HONOR'S LARK BY RACHEL L. HAMM

Here it is! The cover for my next book, Honor's Lark:

HonorsLarkCover

This beautiful cover was designed by Jaclyn Parks of Twin Dog Designs (she also designed the cover for my debut novel, Twenty-Five). Her website is currently undergoing re-design, but you can reach her at twindogdesigns@aol.com.

Summary:

In a world where everyone is assigned a lifemate at birth by the Gods, thirty year-old Honor is still looking for hers. When her new boss, Sedric, points out that her mate probably died before they met, Honor embarks on a quest for closure. She needs to know who her mate was and what he was like so she can move on with her life.

Sedric is determined to help Honor, because he understands the emptiness she's feeling. As they search for Honor's lifemate and get to know each other, they start to wonder if the only kind of love is that which is fated and if there really is only one person for everyone.

Excerpt from Chapter One:

I stumbled into work the next day a half-hour late, thanks to the copious amounts of wine at Bonnie and Caron’s house. No one appeared to notice, though, as I slid into my cubicle and powered up my computer.

"What day is it?" I muttered to myself, opening the company-wide calendar. "Ah." Wednesday, the fifteenth day of the tenth month. A meeting for my division was listed at 10:00, so I printed the agenda and answered the most urgent emails in my inbox before heading to the lounge to grab a cup of coffee.

“Morning, Honor!” my teammate Alyscia said brightly as I added cream and sugar to my mug.

I yawned. “Morning.”

“Did you hear the good news?”

I took a sip and shook my head. “What? Did Felix sit in paint again?”

“No, silly, I found him!”

“Found who?”

“My lifemate, of course! Look!” She pushed aside the collar of her shirt to reveal her lark, now a complete, leafy tree. The last time she’d shown it to me, too many pieces of the puzzle were missing and I hadn’t been able to make out what it would eventually be.

“Oh. Great. Congratulations.” It was a strange thing to offer congratulations on. It’s not like she achieved some major accomplishment. Everyone found his or her lifemate eventually. Well, everyone except me. I walked away without asking for more details, though I could tell she was dying to share exactly how she found him and what he said to her when they met and how perfect they were for each other. My stomach was already queasy from the hangover – I didn’t want to push it over the edge.

Besides, Alyscia was only twenty-one. She started at the consulting firm a few months out of school. What right did she have to be flaunting her lark? She hadn’t been looking for a long time. Most people I knew found their mates at some point between eighteen and twenty-four.

I slumped into a chair at the end of the conference table, as far from the front of the room as possible and gulped down my coffee, ignoring the bitter sting as it burned my throat. My co-workers filed in, bouncing to their seats like a bunch of toddlers. A few were even discussing Alyscia’s lark at high volume. To listen to them, one would think it was the biggest news to hit Linhill all year. I blocked out the conversation by reading over the agenda for the meeting.

The leader of our division, Felix, walked in with another man I didn’t know. The new guy was tall, at least a head taller than Felix, and dressed in an expensive-looking grey suit. They took seats at the head of the table and the babble in the room quieted as Felix arranged the agenda and glass of water in front of him.

“To kick things off today I want to introduce our new division manager, Sedric Eckland. He’ll be taking over Maling’s accounts now that she's been promoted and he’ll also be responsible for evaluating the team over the next couple of months. Sedric, would you like to say anything?”

“I’m happy to be here and look forward to working with each of you.” Sedric surveyed the room, taking a brief second to meet each individual’s eye. When he reached me, I averted my gaze.

Turnover was common in our section. It was kind of a joke within the company: head to Division Four if you’re looking for a life change. I was the longest-term employee at four years. The pool on how long Sedric would last was probably already forming in Divisions One, Two, and Three.

Once Sedric finished all of his eye contact, Felix made a check on his agenda and moved to the next topic. I sank as low as I could in my chair and rested both arms on the table in front of me. Being the senior member of the team at least gave me the advantage of already knowing most, if not all, of Felix’s talking points. I tuned him out as easily as I’d tuned out the gossip regarding Alyscia and found my eyes focused on my own lark.

When I was younger, I loved that my lark was so visible – always right there on my wrist. I could look at it whenever I wanted. I could show it to my friends, my family. It was a source of comfort and hope. I spent hours tracing the pieces over and over with my fingers. Memorizing every line, every curve. Trying to figure out what picture it would form when I found my lifemate and it completed itself.

As Felix droned on, I found myself falling back into the old habit – using my right index finger to continually follow the outline of the lark. I didn’t care what my boss was talking about. It didn’t matter. I focused my energy on tracing and willing the damn thing to just go away already. I did what I was supposed to do – I followed my stupid erratic pull as long as it led me, but it led to nothing. Nothing. If I was going to be alone, I didn’t want the horrible, ugly reminder of it staring at me day after day, week after week, year after year.

What were the Gods playing at, anyways? Giving humans these marks, determining destinies, but leaving me out in the cold wondering what I’d done wrong to deserve such loneliness and the constant reminder of it. And if it wasn’t bad enough that I could see the damn mark every day, everyone else could see it, too. My co-workers, friends, and family saw the unfinished lark and their eyes filled with pity for poor, lonely, lifemate-less Honor.

“Honor?” Felix basically shouted. I straightened up. One glance around the table told me he’d called my name more than once.

“Yes?”

“Welcome back. Were you having a nice daydream?”

“I was. It’s strange how your voice can lull me into fantasy land every time you speak.”

His face reddened, probably with both anger and embarrassment. He’d never gotten used to my sarcasm and I knew he wanted to fire me on several occasions, but since my clients were so pleased with my longevity, the higher ups wouldn’t let him.

“Did you want something from me?” I asked, putting a sweet smile on my face.

“Um, yes, well, since you've been here longer than the rest of the team, you’ll be partnering with Sedric for a few weeks. He’ll be going on your calls to shadow you and you’ll be going on his calls to introduce him to Maling’s clients. You know, show him the ropes. Do you think you can manage that?”

“Nothing in the world would give me greater pleasure.” I wiped the smile from my lips and peered at Sedric. I expected eye contact again, but he was staring at my hand. No, not my hand. My wrist – my lark. Great, just great. I yanked my sleeve down and put both hands in my lap.

He looked up and faced Felix. “Sounds good. Anything else on the agenda?”

“No, we're done for today. Back to work, everyone.”

I jumped from my seat and was the first person out the door. Practically running to my cubicle, I tripped on a loose piece of carpet and face-planted.

“Whoa – careful. Are you okay?” Sedric reached down and helped lift me while the rest of the departing members of my division looked on. I brushed myself off and wriggled out of his grasp.

“I’m fine.” I could feel his stare on me as I stormed away.

I tried not to speak with anyone else for the rest of the day. Embarrassed by the fall, the meeting, and Sedric’s eyes on my wrist, I couldn’t face the normal around me. I didn’t want my new boss to immediately know just how sad I was. It would make the weeks of having to work one-on-one with him unbearable.

Honor's Lark will be available for Kindle and in paperback on May 15, 2014.

In the meantime, if you're looking for romance, check out my debut novel, Twenty-Five.

Finally, Back to Blogging

After several months of not much crafting, but tons of writing, I am back! I am happy to announce that I did in fact win NaNoWriMo this year! Forgive me as I do my little happy dance. I am also about 20,000 words away from completing my first novel! That I am REALLY excited about. My plan is to have it completed by the new year, so I can have my local critique group look at it and then start the editing process.

Also, the local library that hosted many of the local NaNoWriMo events gave all of the winners a fancy trophy. I think it looks great on my Christmas mantle.

I would like to thank the Academy. . .

Crafting, of course, was put on hold for the entire fall. With doing my research and writing pretty much non-stop, I just didn't have any time to craft. But, January will be when I dive back into my crafting, even with a fun and economical year long craft-a-long.

I did get a little crafty treat last month, when two of my craft projects were published in Interweave's Stitch Gifts 2014 magazine.  Super cool! While I was in Barnes and Noble this past weekend I noticed it is the featured title in the craft section. Pretty awesome!!!

And as you have probably noticed, I am giving my blog a little face lift. My plan is to have it all done by the new year, so please bear with me for the next couple of weeks. :)

Crocheting and Reading

Crocheting:

My temperature afghan is coming along slowly but surely. I am contemplating only doing this afghan until the summer. It is going to be HUGE if I do the entire year. Plus, I have decided to crochet several of my family members Christmas presents this year, and I really need to get started on those. We'll see how the next few months go.

I have also signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo.

It is a lot like NaNoWriMo, but we get to choose our word count and it is in April! I have chosen to go with 30,000 words instead of 50,000. That makes it an even 1,000 words a day. My goal is to have my YA book completed by the end of August, so I think this is the perfect push to get me writing every day.

Having said all of that, my crafting is most likely going to take a hit, so I will probably be MIA the month of April. I think I'd better start on my Christmas presents this month, so I can focus on writing next month. I bought my yarn a few weeks ago, so hopefully I'll have pics next week.

Reading:

I have had Cinder (Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer on hold at my library since before Thanksgiving. I had actually forgotten about it until I got my email that the book was ready for me to pick up. I sat down the Saturday that I picked it up at the library and read 3/4 of the book. I read the rest of it on Sunday. The last book I read that fast was the first Harry Potter book.

I LOVED this book. If you don't know anything about it, it is a twist on the story of Cinderella. I don't want to give anything away for those who are planning on reading it, but it is super clever and really well written.

Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) is the next book in the series. I believe it is about Little Red Riding Hood. I have that one on hold at the library now. I am only #35 on the list, so I should be getting my notice in the next few weeks!

Crocheting and Reading

Crocheting:

Well, it has been awhile since I checked in with my crocheting. I have been gearing up for NaNoWriMo, which incidentally starts in 8 days! Yikes!!! So, this will probably be my last post until December. I will be putting away my hooks and needles for pencils and pens. :)

I did start a new project in prep for NaNoWriMo. I figure I'll need a little relief from all of the writing, and what better way than to crochet an afghan. I'm using Bella Dia's vintage vertical stripe pattern. The pattern calls for a chain of 250, but from what I have been reading from other crocheters that is a bedspread size afghan. I only want a lapghan, so I chained 160. It will cover me from my waist to my feet. Perfect!

The picture below only shows my first few rows, but I really wanted to show the change in color. Again, I am going for a Cath Kidston colored throw. I am using this pattern as inspiration. My pattern will be striped with two rows of each color. The colors are:

light blue
snow white
yellow
snow white
sage green
snow white
red
snow white
light pink
snow white
repeat

So far I only have the two rows of light blue and one row of the snow white, but the first two rows are always the hardest. Now it is smooth sailing! I'm really liking the snow white colored white, which is Red Heart yarn. It isn't as bright as the regular white.

I'm looking forward to completing this lapghan by late winter or early spring, and destashing some yarn while I'm at it!

Reading:

In prep for NaNo next week I've been trying to get in as much research as possible, while finalizing my characters, settings, and plot ideas. It has been a very busy October!

I completed my plot board last weekend too.

This was a big deal. I'm so happy for my local NaNo writing group. They have put the fire under my bum that I needed to get this stuff done. I now have my rough outline of how my book will play out. Yipee!

Daphne enjoyed looking at it too. She kept rubbing up against it and knocking it on the floor, which is why it is now tacked to the wall. :)

I'm currently reading Cause of Death: A Writer's Guide to Death, Murder, and Forensic Medicine. Yes, I am writing a mystery. :) This is part of The Howdunit Series from Writer's Digest. If you are a mystery writer, this series is a must have. I own two of the books from the series (you can sort of see them on my writing bookshelf in the picture above): Deadly Doses: A Writer's Guide to Poisons, and Amateur Detectives:A Writer's Guide to How Private Citizens Solve Criminal Cases. I'm hoping to eventually get all of the books (I think there are 17 in all).

This book is a little gruesome, but very interesting. My book has a very high body count, so learning about the various methods of trying to save someone (and not saving someone) has been very helpful.

So, I'll be signing off until December. Hopefully when I post again I will have my 1st draft of my book completed, and some of my afghan too. :)

Crocheting and Reading

Crocheting:

I have been spending the last few weeks sewing some Halloween projects and working on my book, so my hook has been hibernating. But, I took out this week to start a new Halloween inspired crocheted scarf that will be available in my shop late next month.

For this scarf, I use Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn. I tend to have a hard time working with a G hook and cotton yarn. It always gets stuck in between the strands of yarn and drives me absolutely crazy. But as I was cleaning out my craft room, I came across this cute wooden handled G hook. I completely forgot about buying it. Oh the stuff I find in that room. It is like a treasure trove of crafts. :) I usually use plastic hooks because my hands are always "moist" and metal hooks make my hands smell like metal. Yuck! But this little guy has a metal top with a wooden bottom. It actually worked really well, and though I still favor the plastic hooks this is a nice alternative!

Reading:

Last Saturday, a little before 5:00 am, I woke up out of a dead sleep with a brand new idea for a novel. That is pretty much how I get my ideas, in the middle of the night, which is why I have a notebook, pen, and flashlight in my nightstand. I also always have my iTouch nearby, and the notes app is perfect for late night ideas!

I was fortunate, this time, to have a very well defined idea, so I jumped right into researching. One of my favorite places to go for my research/writing material is my local used books store. I have found more than half of my writing books there, plus the prices are great! As I was searching through the dozens of bookshelves a book caught my eye, Bitten: True Medical Stories of Bites and Stings by Pamela Nagami. I knew right away that this book would be perfect for my writer's bookshelf.

I have already read two chapters: spiders and jellyfish. The quote on the cover from Publisher's Weekly is spot on, "Fascinating but frightening". It really is! I can't wait to read the rest!

Will one of my characters meet their demise by being bitten or stung? You'll have to wait and see. :)
